Bits of my latest spoils: Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill, a chunky gold bracelet with jewel charms from H&M, issue twenty-six of POP (a newfound love!).


I discovered POP just very recently on a trip to town and was immediately pulled in by its three hundred-over pages – if there’s anything better than an intelligent fashion magazine, it’s a thick, intelligent fashion magazine. Despite the fact that it’s a twice-yearly publication.

In a rapidly changing world, POP magazine is a leader, not a follower. With a bold, international perspective and an understanding that the cultural and business landscape is being dramatically rewritten, POP looks to join the dots and celebrate the world’s key creatives. POP has been touted as a ‘super glossy’, with an established reputation for visual innovation and splendour. Fashion and its related universe is a prism through which so much of contemporary creativity, as well as the evolving celebrity culture, ends up being refracted. But fashion also reflects many universal human desires and dreams that hold the key to making sense of a world where the only certainty now is change. POP is the magazine the international catwalk creatives look to for a fresh perspective on all that is new and truly exciting in work, leisure and travel. It celebrates art, design, retail, adventure, pop culture, pop music and much more in our rapidly shifting world. POP is smart and it looks to celebrate both interior spaces and outerspace. Change is good, change is inevitable, change is now.

How can you not love its manifesto?

I still have yet to sink my teeth into it as I’ve been caught up with studying for my papers, but the features and editorials looked delectable enough to tempt me into a quick flip-through: Dior VS Art, Moon Portraits, POP China: Fast Lane, Report I: Beauty Orientalism, Report III: Fur China Pelted (as in the picture above), POP Chinatown: New York, Moon Rocks, Moon Dust is Icing Sugar, Crescent, Lunatique, Nitewalker, just to name (a little more than) a few. I simply adore their wordplay, and I love how they took the moon and Chinese influences as the inspiration behind this issue. ‘Marie Piovesan, super-smart Aquarius, in the age of Vuitton’s candy sex fairytales.’ Mm, it doesn’t get any better than that.

POP heavily reminds me of LOVE, another one of my favourite biannual fashion reads,

LOVE is a twice-yearly compendium of inspiration – for designers, for artists, for anyone looking for visual ideas; for anyone who loves fashion and design so much that they want to climb inside the heads of their heroes. Fashion is part of a creative cross-cultural dialogue and, for this reason, LOVE opens its readers to the most exciting developers in music and art as well as fashion to reveal the shape of tomorrow’s aesthetics in its purest form.

Oh, and Victoria’s Secret is finally coming to London this summer! The three-floor flagship store is set to be in Mayfair, while two or three other stores will be scattered throughout the city. I can hardly contain my excitement.

Back in April, I blogged about wanting to do a series of Fashion Against AIDS 2012-inspired shoots similar to that of H&M once my final papers were done with, and the lovely Maritxu and Bryan were more than willing to be my first couple!

It was my very first time doing an actual shoot as the photographer, sans any equipment (flash guns, reflectors, etc.) except for my trusty camera and its built-in flash. Oh, and a whole lot of determination of course! I still have a lot to learn but it was a brilliant experience, shooting at 1am in the middle of the night with my favourite couple, who had (and have!) such incredible chemistry together.

One of my aims for doing these Fashion Against AIDS 2012-inspired shoots is to showcase the couples’ unique style, chemistry and connection. Two individuals coming together by choice, willingly opening themselves up and bringing each other into their own respective worlds – it’s a beautiful thing, and I want to capture the essence of it and share it with the world. Because as I’ve said before, this world needs more love, sweet love.

The Swedish brand (and one of my high-street favourites!) has joined forces with legendary fashion director – and creative consultant for Vogue Japan (formerly groundbreaking fashion editor of Vogue Italia) – Anna Dello Russo, who is known for her signature maximalist, pile-it-on approach, to create and design a collection of boldly extravagant accessories which mirrors her flamboyant style.

I find it incredibly interesting to see H&M collaborating with a fashion personality rather than a fashion house or designer this time around, and even more so since Anna Dello Russo is one of my personal favourites in the fashion industry. She sees this collaboration as the sign of an important evolution in fashion, and is both thrilled and humbled to be the one chosen to lead it.

The line is described by H&M as over-the-top and unabashedly glamourous, yet precious and playful, an expression of Anna Dello Russo’s taste for ornamentation. And in the words of Margareta van den Bosch, creative advisor for H&M, the collection is a celebration of excess, fantasy and decoration. Mm.

A revealing preview of the collection released by the chain earlier today showcased fierce lashings of gold with radiant turquoise accents, loud embellishments complemented by gleaming jewels, and a seductive serpentine theme (oh, yesss).

The highly-anticipated collection is slated to be available from the 4th of October 2012 (I’m marking my calendar!), both online and at selected H&M stores – right at the peak of the global fashion weeks. It’s still a good five months away but I’m well excited, and I’m looking forward to seeing the whole collection so I can make my personal picks before it’s actually launched worldwide.

I love fashion. I do, and especially so when it’s paired with a good cause. Needless to say, I was completely captivated by H&M’s Fashion Against AIDS campaign this year. It’s sexy, suggestive and just this side of raunchy, provocatively conceptualising the whole Make Love, Not War notion while raising awareness of HIV/AIDS amongst youth.



Daaamn (just had to add that).

The collection was released on the 26th of April 2012, both online and at selected H&M stores. For every purchase, 25% of the funds is donated to HIV/AIDS prevention, including the United Nations Population Fund, the MTV Staying Alive Foundation, YouthAIDS and Designers Against AIDS. So fight (or in this case, spend) for a generous cause – I know I’m planning to get myself a signature T-shirt!

Or if you’d prefer, you can kiss for a good cause. $1 is donated to HIV/AIDS prevention for every smooch uploaded. It’s such a lovely (and interesting!) concept, I’ve to say. You can even send a make out request, inviting someone to join and support Fashion Against AIDS 2012. Tens of thousands of couples have already participated and added their snogs – it’s love all around here, baby. So sign in. Make out.

Also,

I’m now wanting to do a Fashion Against AIDS-inspired series of shoots, similar to and inspired by the H&M campaign this year. Except this time, I want to be the one behind the lens. I’ve already gotten two couples and a few individuals who are willing to get all steamy in front of the camera, but if you want in too, do tell! Preferably couples unless you’re alright with kissing and being all sexy with an absolute stranger – which is pretty kinky, admittedly. *eyebrow wiggle
